Anchovies (Nethili) Curry

One of the healthiest and tastiest fishes. Its usually eaten fried but it also makes a good curry.

You Need:

  • About a kilo of fresh anchovies.
  • One onion, finely diced.
  • 5-6 Tomatoes, finely diced.
  • 3-4 Green Chilies.
  • A tablespoon of tomato paste.
  • A teaspoon of ginger-garlic paste.
  • Some turmeric.
  • Coriander powder.
  • Tamarind about 2 inch square.
  • Coriander leaves, chopped up.

Put the tamarind in a bowl of water and microwave for about 90 seconds. Leave it aside.

Saute onions in mustard oil, When they have softened and turned translucent, add the whole chilies and the ginger-garlic paste. Saute till the raw smell is gone. Add the tomato paste. Mix well.

Add turmeric and coriander powder. Saute for a minute and then add the tomatoes. Season with salt. Cook on low medium heat for about 15 minutes.

Squeeze the tamarind and strain the water. Add this sour water into the pan and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and add the coriander. After mixing well, carefully spread the fish in it. Cook covered for about 7-8 minutes.

Enjoy with hot rice.
